Chemo brain

This phenomenon really does exist. For many patients in cancer treatment, particularly strong chemotherapies, short-term memory is all but gone. Sometimes, it can actually be humorous, but it does cause problems in your spouse's ability to function in daily life. As his/her spouse, it can be difficult, frustrating and scary to witness.

How to deal

  • Realize that your spouse may have trouble finishing sentences, may grope for words or may sometimes use incorrect words.

  • Take a deep breath if you find yourself getting impatient with your spouse's chemo brain, and remember that he/she truly cannot help these issues. All you can do is try to gently prompt them to finish their sentence, or ask them to clarify what they just said.

Practical tips

  • Have notepads, scratch paper and pens everywhere - even in the car - as memory aids. Voice recorders also work well for taking notes.

  • Your spouse will, at some point, have to come to terms with the effects of chemo brain. He or she will need to take notes for everything. Some spouses may resist admitting that they are having trouble, even when it is very obvious to you.
