The Stupid things we have all done

Postby mherynk » Fri Sep 07, 2007 7:22 am

I just had a conversation that reminded me of some of the stupid/funny things I have done becuase of the stress of being a cancer caregiver.

1) The same week Kara was diagnosed, I took my daughter to a birthday party. After about an hour, someone told me my t-shirt was on backwards and inside out.

2) I lost my son once. I was beginning to panic becuase I could not find him anywhere, Kara told me to calm down becuase he was sitting on my shoulders.

What crazy things have you done becuase of the stress/lack of sleep/etc?

You lost your son on your shoulders, that is classic!!!

I know I've done some stupid things.

During my husband's bone marrow transplant I was very depressed. I treated myself and bought one of those stove-top cappuccino makers. I am known for hating to read instructions on stuff. I attempted to make myself some cappuccino. I thought I had read the instructions.... Apparently, there is a pressure valve in there that is supposed to be in the "locked" position. I thought I had done what I was supposed to do. All of a sudden the coffee started brewing and I heard a loud hissing sound; the cappuccino sprayed like a geyser all over my 12 foot ceiling and kitchen cabinets. I still have a stain on my ceiling from this. I guess I should be happy I wasn't near the thing when it exploded. All I could do was cry, because I was so upset to begin with and then I had to spend over an hour on a ladder cleaning stains from a ceiling I could barely reach, while already being completely exhausted.....

My worst thing is that I am a bit disorganized. If my keys are on the table, I cannot find them even if I'm standing right there. After my husband died, I once put down a cup of coffee in my kitchen and could not find it for about 15 minutes. My husband used to say "you look with your ass" because I could never find anything.

He was always the one who would help me find my stuff. We'd be going out and I'd ask where my keys, wallet, cellphone, sunglasses were. He would know exaclty where everything was. Now that he's gone I have issues! I've had to use my house phone to call my cellphone to see where it is before going out.

Now that I have a dog, I constantly search for his collars and leashes. Poor guy is waiting to go out and I'm still looking. I even hung a big hook by the front door so I could hang these items. But are they always there? NO! So, now I ask MY DOG where his collar and leash is; he just stands there and looks at me like I'm an idiot!!!

I guess my stupidity has gotten worse since my husband is gone.

No shoes

Once I got all ready to leave the house, got my purse, and walked out to the car before I realized I didn't have any shoes on!

Just last weekend (I think). I was at Target getting stuff for the house and was taking my time as Jeff was sleeping. I then trotted to the check out line, but no visa check card. I don't usually carry cash or the check book. They had to keep the cart of stuff up by the customer service counter until I drove home to get my visa check card and then I was able to finally purchase the items.

I think my face was bright red, but how funny it is!

I frequently forget my wallet at home. I have to write down everything I need to get done in my day planner or I will forget entirely. Many times I have pulled in the driveway, shut the car off, then realize I forgot to pick my daughter up from school!

Yesterday March 18 2010 I called my neighbor to pick on her for being a geezer as it was her 62nd birthday yet when her answering machine picked up I had to fess up to the fact it was my second attempt to get ahold of her as the first time I dialed her phone number it was with my other hand into the television remote!!! Oops, moron!!! Well what does one expect when one is turning the big 40 in less than a month and does not have his wife to rely on for the little things in life anymore. Anyhow telephone in one hand and television remote in the other...natural mistake they both have similair buttons and button patterns... My story and I am sticking with it. My neighbor had a good laugh out of it anyhow and lightened up a day of some bad news for her too.

Sure glad we have a place to tell on ourselves too for dumb things we all do.

Kent,

After washing the cell phone,
First did it work?
Second did it clean up your language?

Jim:

You know what? I let it dry out for an entire week, charged it up - and it worked!! I'm still using it!

Sadly though - it has not cleaned up my language.

Thanks for sharing all these "stupid" things you had done. I am laughing out loud that my daughter had come to asking why. And, I couldn't make up my mind on what to share on the many blunders I, too, had done.

I thank God for this thread and this forum.

God bless us all,
Amy

I've never done anything stupid. Well, that's far from the truth!

I used to have to hide the Ativan and other anxiety meds - otherwise my wife would gobble them anytime I wasn't looking. Now, I'm not a control freak or a cruel person....she always got more than the prescription called for... but with brain tumors she would forget how much she'd taken and when the last dose was, etc.

A couple of times, I hid the meds so well that even I couldn't find them without turning the house upside-down. We're talking about hours of searching.
